In the workplace, friendships may develop. Friendship means getting involved in another person’s life.
Communication is needed in order to make sure everyone in a relationship is on the same page about the direction of the relationship. Thinking best of another person may be the way to go until the other person does something that really blows trust.
Honesty is key to relationships. In the triangle visualization, honesty makes up the bottom line. Anger may come into play when there is an injustice or violation. However, anger should not be selfish where the person becomes constantly angry or uses the energy for nonproductive use.
Anger may result in yelling, revenge, or depression when a person turns anger on him/herself. Self control is needed to prevent anger from wounding another person. If there is a selfish reason for the anger, remove from the situation in order to prevent bitterness in attitude. Attitude forms one side of the triangle.
Attitude means having forgiveness and compassion. Discover the other person’s needs. Ask what the other person is thinking. Respond versus react by listening first. Be careful of attitude when speaking because people respond to bad attitudes in kind. Even when parties must argue, build versus tear down the other person. Body language and voice tones are more important than the words.
Be angry only at actions, not the person. Leave anger when going on with other areas of life versus carrying around the anger. Ask the other person if he/she is willing to try something in order to get something in return. Do not assume what is going on in another person’s head. Tell the other person the disrespect felt, and if the other person really wants the relationship, he/she will work it out.
