Yahoo! Layoffs
For those who have watched and read the news in January 2008, they may be aware of the announcement by Yahoo! to layoff 1000 of its 14,300 employees in the hopes of returning to growth by 2009.  Some media company executives hearing this news thought of recruiting schemes to approach the employees who may be victims of the layoff.

How does a business decide who to layoff in such layoffs?  The decision may be easy if it is a product line that is suffering.  Those employees in the product line may be the individuals to go unless they are able to transition to another product line.  Layoffs bring up many employment issues on who to choose for the layoffs.  Some companies decide to hide their decisions on certain employees who do not have any contribution to the economic decision by letting them go at times when other employees are let go so that they do not need to confront the employees with courage on performance, political savvy, or other dislikes of the employee which in another termination context may be considered illegal.

Employees suffering from job loss might not see the break as a loss if they have the confidence that they do not need to be dependent on working for any particular employer.  The control on who to use as reference lies with the employee not the employer.  The power to find another job does not necessarily have anything to do with advertised opportunities.
