Dec10
Pearl Harbor Day
Last Friday was Pearl Harbor Day in the U.S.  Pearl Harbor Day is the anniversary of Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.  Many in the U.S. remember the pain of Pearl Harbor because it was an attack that provoked the U.S. into World War II.

These days, there seems to be many events, products, services catered to war veterans, but the news has reported, such as in the San Francisco Chronicle, that many are not into war except for the veterans.  In the news, there are articles that not many people want to see movies on war, including the latest with Tom Cruise.  Sometimes people do not even go to films on the Middle East such as the periodic free films shown by the Arab Film Festival because they think movies on Iraq are sad.

It seems that the events of war are examples of unforeseen catastrophes.  How do people prepare for events that are unknown in the future?  There is the saying to not worry too much about the future because people do not know what will really occur.  No matter how much people sometimes plan and how hard they try, there is not always a prediction to the outcome of things.

There are lessons that businesses can apply from the events of December 7, 1941 and World War II in general.  It seems that no matter how much one country thinks that it is suffering, the same suffering goes on in other countries.  For instance, at the same time, Japan was attacking Nanking in China.

People sometimes think too much about what is missing in their own lives without realizing that that others are experiencing the same traumas.  Sometimes people think they are missing so much that they do not see what they are given.  For instance, a carpenter who has to work long hours for money for his wife and children may complain all the time about how little wealth he has in comparison to the single attorney whose house he is working on.  The carpenter does not see that his wealth may be in his family, and that if he nurtures his children, they may become educated, find good jobs, and someday make high incomes to take care of the man in retirement.  The attorney in comparison may be wealthy in assets, but without relationships, his wealth will only go so far because one person may only work for a limited number of years.  Without the help of others, such as children or relationships, he will not have his wealth continued.
