After entering the jury room, potential jurors are served coffee and tea. There are magazines throughout the jury assembly room, but few electric outlets for the person who wants to bring his/her laptop or cell phone to do work while waiting.
After every potential juror has settled in a seat, someone shows a video on the procedures a juror must follow. The video is explains well the differences between challenges for cause and peremptory challenges just like the definitions given in a bar exam outline.
The federal court is good to pay jurors $40/day, mileage from their homes, and validate parking. This is different from other courts who may call in potential jurors and not pay them anything unless they get called for a trial.
After the video, potential jurors fill out a questionnaire on availability. Then, potential jurors are picked randomly if they do not have hardship reasons to serve. There is much flexibility to the comfort of jurors at the federal courthouse. When there is waiting time, jurors are allowed to go to a cafeteria on the second floor or a snack bar on the 10th floor.
