During the holiday season, people are buying toys for gifts, or to donate. HealthyToys.org is a resource where people can learn about toy safety such as which toys are safe what elements are contained in certain toys.
HealthyToys.org probably came out of the news this year on the toy recalls. Organizations, even the post office, are beginning to worry about the liability associated with gifting toys. However, how safe is safe. Today, there is the anxiety about lead, but other products such as lipstick contain lead too. There is also the anxiety of some toys causing sleep or other disorders when swallowed or put in the mouth such as the date rape drug. Though, should the buyers of such toys or the manufacturers of such toys be to blame when children are misusing products that are not meant for eating? Shouldn’t it be the parents, guardians, or caregivers who should take on liability for not properly monitoring children while they are playing?
Besides HealthyToys.org, other resources for toy safety may be consumer reports web sites or government web sites that provide recall information. Being listed on the HealthyToys.org web site may not be of much value if the information does not come directly from the manufacturers or some type of thorough investigation.
