The buzz for this week includes the start of the annual Jewish holiday Hanukkah. How does Hanukkah affect businesses and the law? When studying employment law, there is the talk of different religions. Many students of employment law think that they are suppose to learn from the teacher, but do not realize that in the end, employment law and any subject for that matter, is learned by the student, with the teacher as the facilitator.
Some people do not understand when they are getting a bargain when they sign up for a class. They complain about reading a textbook when they do not realize that they should read the textbook because they have paid for it. In an employment law class, the textbook might have discussion on how an industry markets products and services tailoring it to religion, such as Hanukkah. Retailers may adjust to include Hanukkah in their product offerings, merchandising, and marketing. For instance, there are Hanukkah cards, and Hanukkah songs. Students reading about religion in their studies should know that much of learning comes from speaking with other students, who may have different religions, not just interacting with the instructor or having the instructor lecture.
