On November 1- 2, 2007, the Federal Trade Commission conducted a two-day “town hall” on behavioral targeting online, entitled Ehavioral Advertising: Tracking, Targeting, & Technology.
Among the speakers was Nicole Wong, who is Deputy General Counsel Google, Inc. Prior to joining Google, Nicole was a partner at Perkins Coie, LLP, where she specialized in Internet law, including online content regulation, intellectual property, privacy, security and eCommerce.
From some research on her background on the Internet, she seems to be a frequent speaker and author on issues related to law and technology. She often posts on the official Google blog about legal news. Her bio shows her as being a prior co-chair of the Practising Law Institute’s Internet Law Institute and as an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law where she taught media law. From reports by Venable LLP of the town hall event, Wong stated that: (1) advertising is a critical component of the web, and (2) Google’s users’ trust and privacy are critical to Google’s business. Google’s designs privacy into its products. Google uses contextual-based advertising by targeting consumers based on their actions, not profiles.
