On November 6, 2007, the Association of Corporate Counsel hosted a seminar in Palo Alto, CA on the issues facing ecommerce 2.0.  Speaker Laura Pirri, Senior Counsel for Linden Lab, spoke about Second Life.  Pirri joined the company 3.5 months ago. 

Second Life is a 3D interactive place for people to exchange information.  It is not a game.  There are no plots, outcomes, objectives, narratives.  Musicians use Second Life to perform and introduce their creative arts.  Architects use it to build scale models.  Certainly, models can be built in real life, but Second Life is a less costly alternative.

IBM Corporation uses Second Life for meetings between scientists who collaborate worldwide.  IBM uses Second Life for external meetings with developers. 

Second Life offers conference tools including an ability to use MS Power Points, IM for private conversations, chats and comments to have side talks that do not interrupt the speaker. 

People have multiple avatars on Second Life.  Pirri spoke of her Linden avatar and the avatar she uses in her personal time. 

Second Life has around 200 employees, with offices around the world, including Mountain View, San Francisco, Seattle, Asia.
