Though the theme of the night was Sweden, the guest speaker from the Swedish Office of Science and Technology did not arrive so when the World Affairs Council’s young professionals group chatted, they spoke about every topic except Sweden. 

For those attorneys who travel to Europe, they may know that Sweden has been a member of the European Union since 1995.  The European Union has been known to be a leader on many aspects of law including antitrust and privacy.  The United States seems to be a follower on these topics.  Privacy, incidentally, has been steaming up in Washington DC, and there will be a conference on Friday, November 30, 2007 in the Venable offices back east to discuss Behavioral Targeting and approaches to the House Judiciary data security bill that will be considered in Committee in the coming months. 

Back to Sweden, quick facts on Sweden include Sweden being a constitutional monarchy, generous on sick leave benefits, and the third largest country in Western Europe.
