The following is not meant to be legal advice.
On November 17, 2007, an attorney of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center spoke in San Francisco, CA to human resource professionals.
Immigration issues may create discrimination for U.S. citizens because those who are visible in the media get targeted.
If a permanent resident does not meet the physical requirement by being out of the United States too long, the person may be deported. Green card is another term for someone who is a permanent resident. If the person has aggravated felonies, he may not obtain citizenship. The application of the aggravated felonies rule is retroactive to old crimes. If a person makes a false U.S. citizen claim, the person can be deported. This may occur with people who grow up in the U.S., going through U.S. schools, thinking they are not U.S. citizens.
How can immigration issues be addressed? Perhaps look at why people come to the U.S., such as escape from war. In order for a person to claim asylum, he/she has to prove he is persecuted in his/her home country. There are work shortages in the U.S. for positions in nursing, agriculture, childcare, elder care. Immigration is discouraged for these positions by not allowing people to take their families wherever they go.
