A recent issue of the California Lawyer in November 2007 reported on Annie E. Thorklson starting a clinic in coffee shops known as LegalGroundsSF.com. She sits in cafes in neighborhoods where people may not have much access to attorney advice for an inexpensive price.
She charges $1 per minute for her advice. It is a casual clinic, and has brought her DUI cases, landlord/tenant disputes, family law cases.
Though Thorkelson does not charge much, and seems to do it as a public service, she brings up a business idea for other attorneys who wish to market their name and services. Perhaps the same concept of sitting in cafes can be done to obtain corporate work. Attorneys who want to meet venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and others who might refer work to them could set up shop at cafes in Silicon Valley or business areas where business professionals patron. It seems that there are always lay people who need access to legal advice, but do not have the funds for it no matter what their backgrounds, rich or poor.
