The digitizing of libraries seems like a good idea in that it will surely help the environment. Instead of making multiple copies of books, like in the old days when attorneys purchased series of reporters, the digitizing of libraries will make books available everyone without a volume on the shelf.
In the law, Bancroft Whitney (now Thomson) and West started the digitizing of legal libraries with CD-Roms. Bancroft Whitney used to get attorneys interested in CD-Roms by giving away free CD-Rom players with their subscriptions of LawDesk. However, LawDesk has lost popularity with online legal case rulings directly from the web sites of courts.
However, what legal issues could result in library content being readily available online? With information easily available, there will be less royalties for those who publish and write the books? These players will have to find a way to make royalties through users?
