A federal judge in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California issued a preliminary injunction that prevents the Department of Homeland Security from implementing new rules on Social Security mismatch letters. The new rules were effective September 14, 2007.  The new rules required employers who receive a mismatch letter to take steps within 90 days to resolve the mismatch. The injunction prevents the Social Security Administration from sending notices to employers informing them of the new rules.

The preliminary injunction is temporary.  The government may challenge the injunction. If successful, the new mismatch rules could still take effect.
