Some attorneys do not advise copyright registrations for software companies. Usually a software company does not gain anything from registering copyrights and it is burdensome to do so. Most companies only register when they want to sue. This is because there is no federal court jurisdiction unless the copyrights are registered.
Normally registering a copyright involves a $30 filing fee, but a company can get 3 day expedited service when it wants to sue by paying $400 - $500. Copyright registration may give access to statutory damages.
It is not cost effective to go through the formal process of registering copyrights because there is time taken up in filling out the application.
