When paying someone an amount, such as an estate distribution, it may be wise to request the signing of a receipt. A formal receipt should indicate that the person signing acknowledges receipt of the amount as full and final payment for whatever the purpose of the funds. The receipt should indicate the amount of funds. The receipt should be signed. Sometimes when there is a dispute, the receipt is filed with the court so the case number, case title is spelled out.

Along with having a receipt signed, the paying party may also want a release signed such that the person getting the funds will not file any lawsuits for the same injuries in the future.
