In the press this morning, in several newspapers, there was report on the minimum wage increase to $5.85 per hour. The minimum wage has not increased during the past decade. Previous to today, the wage rate was $5.15 per hour. Unbelievable that the increase was only by 70 cents? It is a wonder what kind of living someone can make these days at $5.85 per hour?
Though by 2009, the wage is said to increase to $7.25 per hour. With the minimum wage increase, wage issues seem to be in the spotlight in July 2007. The ACC Docket published an article warning employers to be careful when asking employees for releases against filing suits based on minimum wage prior to paying out severance. It seems that certain rights cannot be waived, and employers should be careful in wording release agreements to make sure that they are asking employees to waive only those rights that can be waived.
