On June 26, 2007, the Senate voted 51 to 48 on a motion to move the Employee Free Choice Act to the Senate floor for a debate on the bill. The Employee Free Choice Act relates to the joining of unions and the rebuilding of the middle class.  Some of the provisions of the bill included establishing penalties for violation of employee rights when workers looked to form a union, and providing mediation and arbitration for contract disputes.  Supporters were not able to obtain enough votes to keep the bill moving through Congress.  Supporters of the motion needed 60 votes to prevent a Republican filibuster.

The bill may be tabled in committee for the rest of the Congressional session, unless amendments are offered to the bill to obtain the 60 votes necessary to move the bill to full Senate.
