ChoicePoint must pay $500,000 in a settlement on May 31, 2007 with 43 states and the District of Columbia.  The funds will be used for consumer education. The states and District of Columbia settled their claims against ChoicePoint, an information service provider, over claims it released records of people in violation of federal and state laws.

With the Federal Trade Commission, in a settlement, ChoicePoint was fined $10 million in penalties.  ChoicePoint, a data broker in Alpharetta, near Atlanta, Georgia, USA, is required to improve its method for evaluating customers who access sensitive personal information, and verify the identities of entities requesting consumer reports.  The ChoicePoint security breach resulted in the conviction of one person for unauthorized access to personal information.
