Though the book centers mostly on dating relationships, the book can be a portrayal of the commitments people have to all types of relationships. It discusses the unattached emotions and distance, people have towards each other. Though there may be physical attention, few attach any care in the uniqueness or well being of others in the physical. One girl reported being left at a bar and drunk without a ride home, though she thought the friends she went with would stick with her through the night.
The book seems to conclude that there is little permanence in relationships once thought to be long term. There are few committed relationships in work between employers and employees, in dating, and in social friends.
