Bill & Dave: How Hewlett and Packard Built the World's Greatest Company by Michael S. Malone is said by Malone to be a book for entrepreneurs looking for a model. It may be the book to read for attorneys looking to see what kind of mentors entrepreneurs look up to.
Malone gave a talk about his book in Menlo Park, CA on May 4, 2007. Several former HP employees attended. Malone said that Bill & Dave: How Hewlett and Packard Built the World's Greatest Company was his 13th book. He used to work at HP in the corporate PR department. Before the late 1990s, Malone wrote about Apple Computer’s history. He was telling a story about a company before its turnaround, and thought that the book would be his last.
He started write Bill & Dave: How Hewlett and Packard Built the World's Greatest Company because he thought Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard were good business men. Even though HP was not going through a good era at the time he started writing, he focused on Hewlett and Packard rather than HP’s history. He discussed why when people lost their jobs they had such emotional attachment to the company. He discussed the interactions between the two men. Malone said that good companies have been lead by pairs, with Google, Inc. and eBay, Inc. serving as other examples.
