The following is not meant to be legal advice.
Laura Stevens gave a talk in San Francisco , CA on March 3, 2007 about integration practices in the workplace. Stevens is a litigator who specializes in employment laws. Stevens owns her own law firm in Oakland , CA .
Stevens spoke about the pro-integration of people with different backgrounds in California. For example, California makes it a goal to have laws that regulate the workplace to ensure that people with disabilities, different races are given opportunities to provide different sources of energy and contributions to the workplace.
Everyone has unconscious prejudices. The unconscious prejudices drive behavior. For example, a law school professor who needs to use a wheelchair because of foot problems. A person seeing the professor in a wheelchair on the street, goes up to her and gives her a dollar. The mere fact she is in a wheelchair makes someone think that she is a charity case. These prejudices carry on to the workplace.
Another example, some accused in harassment cases, may have predator behaviors. People who harass others may do it again and again. Such persons when investigating harassment cases, should be reviewed to see if they have harassed others before, and if a case is let go without resolution, such accused should be monitored to see if they engage in similar harassment conduct in the future.
