Normajean Hinders gave a talk in
She began with the old fable on the frog and the scorpion, and concluded that in the end the scorpion killed the frog because like people, the scorpion could not go against his nature. In trust, she explained that people have to first get to know another person’s character in order to see if they could be trusted.

There are three factors for trust: predictability, dependability, and taking the risk to try something new with the faith that the relationship will work out. Predictability comes from being consistent with character. It is assumed that future behavior mirrors the past. This is why it is important to pay attention before making adjustments in relationships. A person should feel free to walk away when he/she has to make too many extensions for no one should have to be the caretaker of another. Dependability requires someone to show up during life’s difficulties.
