Feb22
2007 International Law Weekend

During the weekend of February 2 – 3, 2007, Santa Clara University School of Law hosted the International Law Weekend – West 2007.

The days were filled with lunch, panels of law professors who spoke on geography, due process rights of foreign litigants, cybercrimes, recent developments of NAFTA/CAFTA, discussions on Cambodia, intellectual property abroad, among other topics.

The keynote speaker for February 2, 2007 was Jack N. Rakove, Stanford University.  He spoke about the president as commander and the executive powers interpreted from the constitution.  Rakove’s background is on history.  He has taught political science at Stanford University since 1980.  He has written on national politics, James Madison, and the election of 2000.

Rakove’s discussions centered on the three powers of the constitution as it was originally written, and the powers that have been interpreted from it over the years.  He spoke about the Iraq war, the president’s authority on foreign policy, the intervention of the Supreme Court, and interpretations of necessity.

Rakove’s talk was followed by a dinner with professors.  During the dinner, conversations centered on tenure requirements, the politics of the university environment, and the teaching and scholarship requirements of law school professors.
