Though already into the new year, thought it might be interesting to recount some top legal events of 2006.
First, there were the stock option probes. Seems like everyone knows what stock options are these days, and how people are able to make money off of them. The issue affected well known players in the high tech industry, and led to the resignations of executives and general counsel. Still under questioning is Steve Jobs of Apple, Inc. (Apple). For those who do not know, Apple Computers, Inc. recently changed its name to Apple, Inc. It seems to be more fitting since Apple does not manufacture computers these days.
During the summer President Bush signed new legislation relating to pensions. Seems like employment attorneys had to update themselves on retirement benefits laws.
Late in the year, the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) distributed rules on executive compensation. Appears that corporate attorneys involved in SEC filings will be busy learning how to prepare tables for the 2007 proxy season.
Anyone who wants to share what he/she thinks were the top events of 2006, please make a comment.
