For the attorney who might need to take depositions, here are some guidelines. First, the attorney needs to swear in the witness. The attorney should review deposition procedures prior to attending the deposition. The attorney should note objections by opposing attorneys.
When beginning the deposition, the attorney should ask the witness what documents the witness reviewed prior to attending the deposition. During the deposition, the attorney should take notes on the testimony.
The attorney should give his/her business card to the court reporter so that the court reporter knows how to write his/her name. The attorney should bring along the case file to the deposition.
