What is Open Office? It is a suite of programs that offer the attorney who has his/her own business and wants to save money all the capabilities of MS Office at no charge. Open Office is an open source product, just one of the many Open Source Initiative applications available to the attorney entrepreneur. Of course, like other open source software, the product may not provide direct support, but then again, it is free and the user has developers in the community working together to improve the product.
Open Office was developed by StarDivision, a European company. It was then purchased and marketed as Star Office by Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Sun). As most people know, Sun was the creator of JAVA.
Open Office offers the following features: Writer like MS Word that functions as a word processor, a feature to save documents in .pdf format without having to use a scanner or license a product from Adobe, Calc spreadsheet like MS Excel, Impress tool for creating presentations like MS PowerPoint.
