Curse of the Golden Flower, a film by Zhang Yimou, the same director as Hero and House of Flying Daggers, might give the attorney who is learning Mandarin or working on transactions with China, a way to practice his/her ability to understand Chinese, and at the same time, experience Asian culture.
The movie is about an empress who tries to battle against the rule of an emperor who plots to make her ill by requiring her to drink poison every hour. When the empress tries to escape, the soldiers of the emperor and empress battle each other with arrows. In the end, only the eldest son of three survives, but he ends up killing himself. The emperor told the son, he would spare his life if he served the empress the poison every hour. After the killings, the home is restored with flowers, as if none of the fighting ever occurred. The emperor eats his meal.
The movie reminds that sometimes it may be best not to marry. Even though one is able to have all the riches and servants, the person one is living with may have no care for one’s well being and may even be plotting one’s death. The film reminds that some people’s words are not to be believed though they are in respected positions such as being the father or the emperor. Sometimes kind gestures such as promotions are part of self-centered plans so one should not always be too taken by the words of others.
