The Road Less Traveled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth by M. Scott Peck is about discipline, love, and grace. It may be a helpful book for the attorney seeking to understand people, and his/her reactions to people.
The book starts out with discussions on discipline, defining the differences between neuroses and character disorders. It comments that life is difficult, and advises to confront problems first (eating the cake) prior to enjoying the pleasures (eating the frosting).
It next discusses dedicating to truth. It gives reasons for why people lie. Usually people lie because of the embarrassing consequences. There is the example of Richard Nixon and Watergate. Being open and truthful makes it easier to live because one need not try to cover up lies or remember lies. What is true must change in time and people should not cling inappropriately to the past.
Discipline also involves balance such as giving up life styles or behaviors (e.g., necessity to win) in order to get out of depression or guilt that results from provoking emotional pain in another person.
