On November 8, 2006, The Asia Foundation, hosted a Portraits of Leadership to honor women involved in changing the economic and political climate in Asia. The Asia Foundation is an organization that believes women should be part of the promotion of social, economic, and political rights and opportunities in Asian nations where there are high levels of illiteracy, poverty, discrimination, gender-based violence.
One of the speakers was Shumei Huang, a lawyer and director of Legal Service Center in China. She started a legal aid bureau for migrant women workers. She overcame hurdles such as court system corruption, legal status of migrant workers, convincing lawyers to take cases. She used media to get people to raise visibility on the subjects. Since she began the bureau, success resulted when people started to respect workers’ rights. Many employers did not abide by Chinese laws. The migrant workers were not aware of their rights, had to support their families, and had little education. Most of the cases involved labor injuries. Thus far, the bureau helped about three hundred thousand women.
