On November 19, 2006, a panel of speakers presented in Menlo Park, CA techniques on how to be more open to other people, and how to invite other people into one’s world.
In order to have lasting relationships, the panelists indicated that one had to make time for other people. This means showing up and being present rather than controlling encounters and focusing on what one might get out of the relationship. Sharing should be progressive such that not everything was revealed at once. Sharing did not have to be in words, but could be in actions. Reliability, which may be indicated by being on time for appointments, was a factor in whether someone decided to disclose vulnerabilities, passions.

Being available to someone means not only being with the individual during good times, but also not abandoning the person when he/she is going through bad times, and being able to talk to another person on both big profound issues and light small issues.
