On November 6, 2006, Rob Enderle, President and Principal Analyst, Enderle Group, an emerging technology advisory firm, moderated a panel on the impact of social computing on media and marketing in Palo Alto, CA. Enderle currently writes for TechNewsWorld, Dark Reading, and Digital Trends, and appears on WSJ Radio, CNBC, NPR, and Bloomberg Radio/TV.

The panel included speakers from Technorati, LinkedIn, Media Survey, and PodTech.net. The speakers and Enderle made the statement the media industry has been displaced by every day people. Such a phenomenon was not predicted in 1995 when the Internet became mainstream.

For instance, sites such as Techmeme watch for the top technology bloggers. Each link to a blog is a vote of confidence, integrity. The blogs go up in ranking when they have more links. A blog that is at the top at the beginning of the day can fall to the bottom by evening. Every five minutes, the site uses algorithms to run page rankings.
