The individual who desires to be on the bench should be aware of him/herself in order to become secure, and better able to see issues that need to be addressed. Every day is an evaluation of a person’s reputation. No matter what is going on in a person’s personal life, the person needs to be consistent in legal practice.
Women and minorities need to be aware of wrong assumptions made by others. For instance, sometimes women are assumed to be court reporters rather than attorneys or justices. Sometimes a minority individual born in the United States is assumed to be from a foreign country. When these improper assumptions arise, the attorney who is secure in him/herself will be able to call out the wrong politely versus taking on the toxic behavior. When someone is able to speak his/her mind, he/she will feel more firm about who he/she is.
