Guest judges at the reception indicated that attorneys who become judges are those who enjoy legal practice. They enjoy the law. There is no pre-calculated career path to becoming a judge. No matter where someone is, if the person is able to earn respect, he/she will naturally rise in the eyes of peers. People will support the individual, or at least not oppose him/her.
It is important when practicing law not to burn any bridges or make any enemies. Having ethics and getting involved in activities outside of work is key to building networks. No matter how good someone is at being an attorney, he/she needs to meet people who will lead him/her to opportunities. These people do not usually come about in daily law practice. They come when an individual distinguishes him/herself by identifying with a community.
