Solo and Small Firm Practice

On September 21, 2006, the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area hosted a talk in San Francisco, CA on the ups and downs of solo and small firm practice.

The panelists included Richard Tamor of Tamor & Tamor. Tamor’s firm specialized in criminal defense, civil litigation, and regulatory matters.

Another speaker was Charles Jung, who started his own firm, Nassiri & Jung LLP, three months ago. Jung was a trial lawyer. Prior to starting his own firm, he practiced commercial, financial, and class action litigation at Kirland & Ellis. Jung stated that having one’s own firm allowed a person to focus more on the projects that he/she enjoyed working on rather than the requirements of those who are conducting the evaluation at any organization. Jung dispelled several myths associated with having one’s own firm, including the myth that one would work less. Jung indicated that he actually worked more since starting his own firm. He indicated that if one was destined to start his/her own firm, he/she should not let fear overtake, and that a person should not stay at an organization if there was this destined alternative.
