On October 1, 2006, Karl Miller spoke in Menlo Park, CA on the goals of relationships. Seeking relationships for emotional fulfillment is not healthy because it is a self focus. The goal of relationships should be to nurture the lives of others and to contribute to life.

Emotional fulfillment needs to come from within. When seeking relationships, evaluate whether the other makes one fee good. Without a self identity, an unsatisfactory relationship results in conflicts.

The purpose of relationships is to encourage and support other people. Add to the other person’s life. Similar interests are necessary to keep each person engaged. Mutual respect comes from not having the need to change someone, but being able to live with someone’s weaknesses. Gratitude frees people to live generously.
