On October 8, 2006, Marsha Ruland gave a talk in Menlo Park, CA on relationships. It appears that many people go about relationships with the wrong attitude. They appear to think more about what others can do for them versus how they can care more about others.

In a study by Neil Clark Warren, although people may match in values, lifestyles, and interests, people who do not see problems in themselves focus too much on failures of others, and end up thinking of others as inferior to them. With this attitude, people are not able to leave others better off by having known them.

In order to build better relationships, people need to focus more on empathy versus judgment by thinking of the other’s interests, improving appearance, allowing mistakes, and listening without interruptions.
