In his book Hiding From Love, Dr. John Townsend writes that depression comes from isolation, when one is not able to find safe, warm relationships in which emotional needs are accepted and not criticized or judged.

Appreciating differences can enhance rather than destroy closeness. Be clear about one’s thoughts, motivations, values because separateness is part of closeness. Good relationships are not possible without freedom to say NO. If someone says YES in fear of hurting another or emotional withdrawal, the person ends up being forced to comply.

In order to build relationships, be aware of imperfections. Enjoy someone even with the flaws, and allow sadness in order to let go of what cannot be had to leave room for what can be had. Don’t hold on to lost hopes because they make it difficult to seek new attachments since the past will preoccupy emotions.
