Facing Loneliness by J. Oswald Sanders is an interesting book for the attorney or business leader who may feel alone in carrying out his/her responsibilities, which often require confidentiality, and removal from the larger workforce.

Loneliness unconsciously reflects a person’s inability to initiate or maintain a stable and satisfying relationship. Loneliness comes from the fact that there were people in the past that are now forgotten, and the hope that there be interpersonal relations in the future out of expectation.

Loneliness is generated from a low self worth, which comes from lack of communications with others in a meaningful way. For instance, the attorney who researches all day with his/her office door closed, and then leaves for home to watch television is inhibited from intelligent conversation and deep thought.
In the rush of pressured lives, the world may dictate one’s agenda versus one’s values. A lonely person may become over possessive, jealous, exclusive in a friendship that makes it difficult to take rejection in stride. This is contrary to someone who has mutual relationships and does not wait passively to move away from isolation. In mutual relationships, friends are accepted as they are and able to pour out their thoughts and words as they are. To forget the self, genuinely become interested in another in a relaxed atmosphere.
