On October 11, 2006, Anwar Ibrahim, former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister, spoke at Stanford, CA about democracy and the Muslim world. Ibrahim was currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He held lecturing positions at St. Anthony's College at Oxford and the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.

Ibrahim, a seven-year veteran Finance Minister of Malaysia, was renowned for his political and economic leadership and insight on issues of accountability and governance, economic empowerment. Ibrahim was a consultant to the World Bank in the areas of governance and accountability and was recently appointed Honorary President of the London-based group Accountability.
He discussed how in some countries such as India, there was no famine because the media was free. Democracy was not just about elections. Democracy was not something that could be negotiated. People in democracy were born free without having to give the government any authority to determine if they were free. In the absence of free media, economic dollars could be destroyed because of a lack of disclosure that did not allow for checks.

He stated that though there are countries where people were anti-American, he observed that the United States people were also prejudiced in their perceptions of other countries. It was more critical for the United States to reflect on misunderstandings because there is freedom of expression in the United States. The United States could not be compared to countries such as North Korea, Malaysia, where the media was still controlled by the government, resulting in the general masses remaining ignorant.
