DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary hosted the New Tech September 2006 Meetup in East Palo Alto, CA on September 5, 2006.

During the Meetup, a representative from Spy Media, Inc. gave a talk on the web site that allowed people to buy and sell photos. Such photos may be redistributed for commercial (such as to newspapers, magazines) or personal use.

The user first logs in to the MySpy page where he/she is able to view Spy Bounties. These are photo classifieds where people indicate photos they are interested in buying or selling. The photos may be on people, places, things. For example, an attorney may be looking for a witness and makes a post to obtain assistance to track down the witness. Another example, an attorney may be interested in inspecting real estate that is located of the attorney’s state. He/she may make a post requesting someone in the locality of the property to take photos for him/her.
The SpyStream feature allows the user to tag bounties he/she is interested in.

Once a user purchases photos, he/she may use the photos for personal reasons unless the photos indicate they may be used non-exclusively. Non-exclusive photos may be published such as on t-shirts and other commercial products.

Many users are located outside of the United States. With the trend of citizen journalism, in stories such as the London bombing and sports events, media companies have been going on to the site to purchase photos for news reports. Unlike some of its competitors involved only in photo sharing, the site is a marketplace for photographers. The company monetizes photos by taking a percentage of sales from every photo sold. This is currently the company’s only revenue stream.
