When studying open source licensing, the attorney might take note of MySQL. MySQL was developed by MySQL AB, a Swedish corporation. MySQL is available under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and dual licenses. A dual license allows derived works to be created without licensing them under the GPL.

MySQL AB’s mission is to make superior data management available and affordable. When using MySQL, good table designing and architecture allow for the addition of products and users as the database grows. With thought, MySQL best practices in indexing items might appear in the where clause, order by, group by, select list, and having.

Indexing the where clause occurs when an item is searched. Not all columns used in the where clause need to be indexed. Indexing order by filters data before results are returned. Indexing group by selects data in a certain order thereby increasing efficiency and performance without having to order at the end. Group by implies something about the data the user wants to get back so there is no need to jump around to obtain record totals. Having is part of the select list. The select list occurs when a column is referenced.
Best practices do not include indexing every item because one would incur penalties to update. If every item is indexed, every single time a row is added, the database would require updating. This may make use of the database slow when it is updated for a simple insert.

Data management results in normalization and saved space. In the database sense, normalization occurs when duplicative data is eliminated, leaving more representative and meaningful data.
