Kannon Do Zen Meditation Center in Mountain View, CA gave a teaching on August 30, 2006 on human connections. It appears that deep happiness contrary to happiness from momentary emotional state, comes from human relations.

There is the opinion that technology has made humans independent and less connected with others. Studies have shown that those in agricultural societies are more happy than those in advanced technological societies. Take for example, The Quilts of Gee's Bend exhibition featured at the San Francisco de Young Museum. The exhibition shows over 60 quilts made by four generations of African American women who inhabit a strip of land formed by the Alabama River. Descended from slaves and isolated by geography, poverty, and government indifference, the women assembled quilts. Each woman touched each quilt. No individual can take credit for any of the quilts because they result from the efforts of each person and the collective.
Though the United States has become rich in material, statistics report that the average American can only count on three friends. Technology makes it less necessary for people to share, negotiate, or cooperate. Today, the average household does not need to share a one line telephone; each person in the average household is likely to have a cell phone with his/her own number. Each home is likely to have its own washing machine, rather than the whole day family affair of having to wash clothes with a burning kettle.

Without human connections, people are less open, generous, and empathetic towards others. Happiness comes from community, and taking people as they are without expectations. Even the sharing of anger, competitiveness, or other negative emotions is better than living in isolation.

Computers and televisions allow people to obtain a lot of information on their own. People can work at home and no longer need to go to an office. However, while taking advantage of technology, one must not lose sight of the connectedness between people, and seek community whenever possible.
