Kimberly Wiefling, founder of Wiefling Consulting, a consulting business that enables companies to tackle leadership, teambuilding, and other issues relating to the execution of visions in the workplace, writes in her latest Occasional Newsletter on how real or perceived differences sometimes distract people, consuming them to the extent that real threats become undetected.

A physicist by training, Wiefling makes observations of the battles people become connected with while attending a baseball game. When one is disconnected from a contest, one is able to wonder why some outcomes are worth celebrating or agonizing about. These observations may be analogized to competitions between executives and middle managers, engineers and marketing, sales and legal.

She writes that when employees pit themselves against each other, the competition win, not the internal teams who end up perceiving each other’s ineffectiveness. Internal friction generates nothing of value and inhibits progress. She advises that people must look beyond the distinction of individuals in order to contribute progress to the world.
