On September 24, 2006, Karl Miller gave a talk in Menlo Park, CA on how to improve one’s relationships. His tips could be applied to the workplace. The ability to build rapport in the workplace is necessary in order for one to contribute to company goals, delegate work to staff, and resolve employee problems.

First, address attachment issues that arise when one projects thoughts onto others, or becomes overly dependent. Bond with safe people who are consistent and trustworthy. Seek security in order to develop openness. When one is able to reveal to another, one is no longer a stranger. This allows for careful responses.

Use active listening to relay reliability for others to disclose. Set aside opinions, and treat everyone’s life as a novel that requires assistance in order for the page to turn. Care about other people, not only the self, such that others may impact one’s life.
Next step is to become self observant. Back up and analyze the self objectively, not be lost in thoughts. Review boundaries, responsibilities, and criticisms. Habitually take time out to think about feedback versus reacting.

Finally, develop healthy self esteem and self respect. When one is self conscious or inadequate, one is likely to be lost in feelings and less able to build relationships.
