DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary hosted the New Tech September 2006 Meetup in East Palo Alto, CA on September 5, 2006.

During the Meetup, Dave Snider, one of the creators of boompa.com, gave a demonstration of another web site that is attaching to the trend of generating revenues from advertisements. For the attorney working in online media, the company makes an interesting case study.
The company currently has a staff of two, and is not funded. It is headquartered in Berkeley, CA. The web site has been up for three months, and has approximately 60,000 unique visitors per month.
The site is a wiki that allows car enthusiasts to network. Users may battle cars by voting on which cars are the best. There are forums for different types of cars, down to the model number, in the talk section. People are able to upload photos of their cars, modifications to their rides, and read about the results of other users’ changes to their cars through blogs prior to making similar changes themselves. For example, there are pictorial guides on how to make oil changes and add spoilers. Because content comes from users, the company has not had to expend on content.

Snider and his partner plan to create similar sites for bikes, motorcycles, and boats. The site uses an AJAX-powered user-submission engine. AJAX is shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML.

Contrary to some of its competitors, the site is not intended to be a store. The company generates revenues through advertisements, and has engaged Federated Media to assist in its sales.
