One development of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is Apache Lucene, an open source project available for free download that serves as a text search engine library. It is written in 100% pure Java. Lucene focuses on searching and indexing, rather than accessing external documents, such as extracting content and HTML links.

Lucene’s features include: ranked searching, phrase queries, wildcard queries, proximity queries, range queries, fielded searching (e.g., title, author, contents), date-range searching, sorting by field, multiple-index searching with merged results.

Like other Apache software and documentation distributions, Lucene utilizes one of the Apache licenses for distribution. The Apache licenses require attribution notices, but there is no copyleft license unlike the GNU General Public License (GPL).

ASF is in the midst of updating its licenses to distribute software and documentation, and to accept contributions from individuals and entities. The changes will likely address current community reflections on patents and contributions.
