Attorneys who attended represented big law firms, corporations, county counsels, and district attorneys offices.
The highlight of the event was a speech by the Hon. Wendy Duffy. Duffy, a Monterey County native, was a member of the 6th District Court of Appeal.
Duffy discussed her decisions to attend law school, and the opportunities for women at the time in the legal profession. She noted that young people today appeared to be certain of their career plans, versus those in the past who might have decided to attend graduate school out of the inability to decide what to do in the real world.
Duffy was a former Monterey County prosecutor. She discussed the balancing of having two daughters and a career, and mentioned that if she was able to do it all over again, she might have taken 3-5 years versus 6 months after each birth to spend time with her children. She mentioned that 3-5 years was not considered a long time in view of someone’s lifelong career.
She closed by stating that when faced with bias, competence was a major quality to exhibit.
