The licensing attorney might make the observation that software companies have begun a new trend of offering free download versions of their products. Why give away products for free? Some of the licenses even appear to be perpetual.

Historically, most enterprise software sales cycles include an evaluation period, where potential customers evaluate software products for without license fees for a specific period of time. From this standard phase in the enterprise software procurement process, the concept of a freely downloadable version has emerged in the software industry. This trend is quickly becoming a standard practice.

The free download makes it easy for potential developers or users to access the power of a product at no-cost license. User the free download licenses limit usage for up to a certain number of users. Users are able to deploy and obtain the benefits of a product quickly without implementation by a vendor’s professional services teams, or a large upfront financial budget.
Once a prospective customer is interested in proceeding with the procurement of the product for the enterprise, it may increase the number of users, and purchase other services such as maintenance, training, or professional services from the software vendor.

For the software provider, the free download assists in the development of quality leads, and a reduction in sales cycle time. The program would also broaden the active community around the software product.
