Crazy Horse was born in the Black Hills, South Dakota in 1842. There is the story that while in Nebraska, he was stabbed in the back by an American soldier and died at around the age of 35.
Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began the carving of the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota as a memorial to the spirit of Crazy Horse, someone dedicated to his people and his lands.
The first blast for the carving was on June 3, 1948. The location includes an Indian museum, built from pine. Its future includes an education and conference center, an Indian university of North America, and medical training center. The project has not taken any public funds, and relies only on donations from visitors and private entities.
Crazy Horse is about opening up to culture, and understanding others' ways of life. It is about defending lands, and the destruction of peoples' lives. Crazy Horse is about making promises, and not keeping them.
Perhaps an understanding of Crazy Horse may be applied to the workplace and every day life where there may be discrimination, or misunderstandings based on different lifestyles.
