On June 3, 2006, Marc Lesser, the former CEO and founder of Brush Dance, a publishing company, and current business coach, facilitated a talk in Muir Beach, CA to business and legal professionals on motivations.
He began with a walking exercise, where participants were directed to walk around a room without following any pattern, all the time paying attention to how their feet hit the ground, where their eyes were directed, and their pace.
He then gave breathing exercises. One technique was a calming exercise that can be done anywhere without anyone knowing: (1) breathe in and then let the breath go, (2) see the breath swirling on the earth or ground, (3) be aware of the gravity holding up the body, (4) imagine the body being surrounded by energy, (5) have in mind a wish, and breathe in imagining getting more of whatever is wanted.
It is rare for intentions not to be made possible no matter what the environment as long as they are aligned with what is realistic. Even when forced into a situation, the situation may not be as limiting as one thinks. Even in bad environments, one should not be too quick to assume that the situation will prevent someone from carrying out his/her motivations. For instance, intentions such as honesty and integrity may be practiced anywhere.
Where someone begins in his/her career is not necessarily where the career will end, and one needs to be aware of his/her motivations as they change. Motivations are not always consistent. Work is an expression of the self, and such expression changes over time.
When there are unwelcomed changes such as illnesses or accidents, the situation can be made positive, as long as there is faith inside.
